Affiliate marketing, honestly explained.

What it is, how the money actually works, and how to do it without being spammy.

What it is

Affiliate marketing means recommending a product and earning a commission when someone buys through your unique link. The company handles the product, the payment, and the customer support — you handle the recommending.

A concrete example

Systeme.io's affiliate program pays 60% commission on every sale your referrals make — recurring every month they stay subscribed. Their affiliate page illustrates it this way: a $17/month Startup plan referral earns about $10.20/month; a $97/month Unlimited referral earns about $58.20/month. (That's their illustration of the math — not a promise of what you'll earn.)

Disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you sign up through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How it actually works

  1. You join a program (usually free — Systeme.io's is free to join, no application, no purchase required).
  2. You get a unique link. With Systeme.io, you can promote any page by appending your affiliate ID to the URL.
  3. You recommend genuinely. Reviews, tutorials, comparisons — content that helps someone decide.
  4. You get paid. Systeme.io pays via PayPal or wire transfer, $30 minimum, processed monthly on the 10th. Referrals are permanently tagged to you (lifetime attribution), so you keep earning as long as they stay subscribed.

The honest pros and cons

Pros: no product to create, no customer support, free to start, can be genuinely passive once content ranks.
Cons: you don't control the product or pricing; commissions depend on traffic and trust, which take time to build; promoting bad products burns your reputation fast.

How to do it without being spammy

  • Only promote what you'd recommend to a friend. Your reputation is the business.
  • Disclose every time. A clear disclosure sentence near the link — it's the law in many places and it's just honest.
  • Teach first. A tutorial that mentions a tool beats a "BUY NOW" post every time.
  • Show the downsides. "Here's who it's not for" is the most trust-building sentence in marketing.

Is it right for you?

Affiliate marketing fits if you like explaining things, you're patient enough to build content that compounds, and you're comfortable saying "I earn a commission if you use my link." It doesn't fit if you want fast money or you don't want to create content.
